Arrowdawn, the Aberdeen-based communications and IT network specialist, has secured a shirt sponsorship and naming rights deal with Gordonians Cricket Club.
Gordon Adie, Managing Director of the award-winning ICT company, presented a cheque to Club President Andy Lowden and Club Captain Blair Thomson at a recent training session.
Arrowdawn Gordonians plan to put some of the funds towards supporting its new club player/coach, Australian Kyle Humphrys, and the running of four teams, including the 1st team that will play in the Strathmore and Perthshire Cricket Union Division 2 this season. Humphrys will work closely with Gordonians coaches Tariq Butt and Jamie Jones.
Mr Adie decided to sponsor Gordonians following his father Alan’s close involvement with the club in the 60s and 70s and the fact Mr Butt – a former work colleague – is involved in the club.
Gordon said: “Arrowdawn is delighted to be supporting such a well-known and prestigious sporting team as Gordonians Cricket Club.
“My father, Alan, was involved with Gordonians for a number of years as a scorer and wrote a short history about the club. I also wanted to help as I used to work with Tariq at the beginning of my career.
“We’re happy to help such a worthwhile, community spirited team and the bonus is I’ve got 70 players across four leagues promoting Arrowdawn.”
Mr Lowden, President of Gordonians Cricket Club, said: “We’re delighted Arrowdawn has chosen to support us. We plan to build a long-term relationship with a company that is clearly going places.
“These are exciting times for our cricket club. We have four teams and a new player-coach in Kyle Humphrys who will complement our own qualified coaches, Tariq and Jamie. We would also like to push ahead with plans to enhance our links with the community by starting a junior section at some point in the future.”
As well as the Strathmore Union side, Arrowdawn Gordonians will have teams in the local Aberdeenshire Grades 2, 3 and 4 this season. The club has also developed strong links with Robert Gordon University and actively encourages students to take up the game.
Arrowdawn, based in the city’s West End, supplies IP telephony systems, networks and support services using only Cisco products which means less cabling and switches are needed, reducing costs and helping IT infrastructure to run more smoothly. The company was named Cisco Scottish Small-Medium Business Partner of the Year 2009.
Gordonians Cricket Club, which has experienced a resurgence in recent years, was founded by former pupils of Robert Gordon’s College in the 1920s.
Teams use the school’s facilities at Countesswells for practice and on matchdays, while the RGU:SPORT complex is used for indoor training. Scotland the What? star Buff Hardie is a former Gordonians player and several Scottish internationals have turned out for the club.
Arrowdawn Gordonians are holding a race night fundraiser at Westhill’s Holiday Inn on Saturday, April 3 (7.30pm). Anyone wishing further information on the race night, playing for Gordonians or helping the club off the field should contact Club Captain Blair Thomson at blair.thomson@live.co.uk
